MAHAL, THE FIRST ALTERNATIVE ART SPACE OF CANAKKALE
Canakkale Biennial Initiative (CABININ), which has been organizing Çanakkale based contemporary art events since 2005 with the non-governmental cooperation and production web that it has created, is now making Çanakkale to have a new and alternative art space: MAHAL, has oppened on the 2nd November 2013.
As a conception and event platform concerning art and culture CABININ, that is organizing national and international events based on social benefit and responsibility, will run these events in MAHAL starting. This old oaknut depot on the shores of Sarıçay near Çay District was recently renovated by Penso family in the memory of Fortüne and İsak Kumru. After the renovation that is rejuvenating city’s cultural heritage the depot which is offering an excellent closed space for art events with its unique architecture, is concluded into the culture and art life of Çanakkale with the name MAHAL.
MAHAL is functioning as a multifunctional, open space, foundation and network for the international projects that will be realized by CABININ as well as all kinds of unique projects that is the production, exhibition and performances of various art disciplines, non-governmental and non-profit events from Çanakkale, Turkey and the world. MAHAL, having the general art director as Seyhan Boztepe, coordinators as Deniz Erbaş and Kubilay Özmen, the advisor as İsmail Erten, is also be open to the civilian groups with its ‘Open Mahal’ programme.
